On Etsy the rule is not about your supplier. It is about who designed the thing.

Moving a working eBay catalogue onto Etsy looks like one more shop window for the same products. It is not. Etsy asks a different question entirely, and the answer is written on its own help pages.

You have a catalogue that works on eBay. Etsy looks like the same job with a different crowd in front of it: same products, same suppliers, one more shop window.

Etsy's rules are not a stricter version of eBay's. They ask a different question, and it is the first line of their own guidance: everything listed on Etsy must be made, designed, handpicked or sourced by you. No entry on that list is a reseller.

eBay asks where it came from. Etsy asks who designed it.

eBay's policy is about supply. Fulfilling orders directly from a wholesale supplier is allowed. Listing an item and then buying it from another retailer or marketplace that ships straight to your customer is not. The test is where the goods come from.

Etsy's definition never mentions the supplier. Reselling, in its wording, is «selling a commercially available item that the seller did not make or design». Drop shipping is selling ready-made products «shipped directly from a third-party supplier to the customer, without any alteration or customization by the seller».

And here is the proof that design is the real test. On Etsy a third party is allowed to produce your goods and ship them straight to your buyer — print-on-demand is named explicitly — provided the items are the seller's original design. Use a production partner for products you did not design and you are breaking the policy. Etsy's phrase: original creations, not ready-made or commercially available products.

So the parcel can leave somebody else's warehouse and land on your customer's doorstep, and Etsy is fine with it. What is not fine is that you did not design what is inside.

The four things Etsy lets you be

The Creativity Standards list four roles, and each describes the seller rather than the goods: made, designed, handpicked or sourced by the seller. Every item, the page says, has to carry a human touch. A production partner must be declared in the listing. On photographs the rule is narrower than it is often repeated: Etsy requires listings to use photos and videos of the items as the seller offers them — which is not the same as banning every supplier image, and is worth reading on their page rather than in a forum thread.

The exceptions are narrower than they read

Drop shipping has one exception: craft and party supplies. Reselling adds vintage items over twenty years old that you picked yourself, and gift baskets that are not entirely resold. The workarounds are already written down as prohibited: adding a card or gift tag to an otherwise unaltered commercially available item is Etsy's own example.

What actually happens — the unexciting version

The ordinary consequence is not dramatic: Etsy removes the listing, and you still owe the listing fees already incurred on it. Etsy's own suspension page puts it cautiously: if your listings have gone, you could have a problem with individual listings rather than a suspended account. Account suspension is documented for repeat violations, after warnings from Etsy.

So «one dropshipped listing closes your shop» is not true. What is true is that the Seller Policy puts three things in one sentence: Etsy may limit the visibility of your account or listings, place restrictions or reserves on your payment account, or suspend the account. The verb is «may». The point is what made the list — the payment account did.

Closed, and still working

While a shop is suspended it is not viewable on Etsy. No new orders. You cannot create listings, buy or print shipping labels on Etsy, or run Etsy Ads. Your listings can go inactive as a block. And you cannot cancel open orders.

You cannot walk away from them either. Etsy's wording: no matter how long you are suspended, you must complete any open orders by filling them or refunding them. If you ship, you buy the postage from your carrier and add the tracking by hand. Miss your stated processing times and Etsy may refund your buyers on your behalf.

The shop is dark and you are still running it, out of your own pocket, with the shop front gone.

And the money

Careful here, because this is where the internet invents things. Etsy does not take your money. The suspension page says you may find funds in your Etsy Payment account being reserved: a percentage of each physical sale held back, released once Etsy can verify tracking showing the order in transit. Digital sales are not held.

The bridge between a rule problem and held money sits in the Etsy Payments policy, in the list of factors behind a reserve. Alongside your dispute rate and whether tracking is available: suspensions or warnings already received.

The same policy lets Etsy delay a payout if it believes a seller's actions could lead to disputes, chargebacks or fraud — a stated range of zero to 180 days. On termination it can hold back enough to cover chargebacks and refunds for up to 180 days, then pay whatever remains. That is not confiscation. It is 180 days.

A permanent suspension can be appealed within six months. Up to two weeks for an answer, no guarantee of reinstatement, and if it is refused Etsy calls that decision final.

Where DropMind helps, and where it cannot

Start with where it cannot. No software can tell you whether you designed something. DropMind asks you once, in its settings, who made the item and when, and sends that with every listing — it does not check your answer. And no software moves an eBay catalogue onto Etsy unchanged and makes it work. That fix is upstream, in what you sell.

What DropMind does is refuse to press publish for you. Every Etsy listing it creates is created as a draft — written into the code rather than into a setting, so nobody configuring it can switch that off. The comment beside the line says why: on a marketplace with strict rules, going live on its own is how a shop gets closed without the owner ever seeing what went up.

Fair objection: Etsy becomes the one channel where you still click publish yourself, listing by listing. In exchange, nothing reaches an Etsy shop that a human has not looked at.

You can try DropMind for seven days before paying anything. Same software, no cut-down version.

Where this comes from

All of it was read on Etsy's own pages on 30 August 2026: the help articles listed below, plus the three legal ones. The eBay comparison is from eBay's own dropshipping policy, same day.

One caveat: Etsy serves those legal pages in the local language and says the English version prevails. We read them in Italian, so what comes from them is paraphrased, not quoted. Policies change and we do not write them: open the pages below and read them yourself.
